Lisa Merritt, 41,  from Walney, community staff nurse for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust in Barrow

Being on Walney Island in South Cumbria is helping nurse Lisa Merritt lead a relaxed life with her young family.

As a staff nurse Lisa spends a lot of time out on the road, visiting patients in their homes across South Cumbria.

"You engage with the patients one-to-one and you are going out and seeing people in their own environment and their home and it is very varied. You never know what's going to happen next, and that's really nice," she said.

"It is a very nice community to engage with. Everyone knows somebody who knows somebody else. You know people's families and you go and see patients and you can chat about lots of things you have in common, it's easy to find common ground.

"You will see people improve enough to be able to come off medication they are on and carry on as they were before."

Lisa says South Cumbria is a safe and friendly place for her and husband Christopher, 37, to raise their children Christian, nine, and Layla, seven.

"I would much rather have a family here than in a big city," Lisa said.

"You can just go off down the beach to places like Roanhead and you can see the views and it's gorgeous, you can get up to the Lakes in a blink of an eye.

"People keep an eye out for each other and the kids all live near each other and know each other. The teachers and everybody knows each other outside of school, it is a lot more personal, you bump into each other in the street and you can have a chat.

"The cost of living here is so much cheaper than in the city. The houses you can get here are miles apart from what you would get for the same money in the city."

"We eat out quite a bit, there are lots of nice restaurants in the Lake District and we really like the Bay Horse in Ulverston.

"Our main activities are based around the kids and so we like to get out walking with them on the beach and there is Furness Abbey, which is a nice place to take them, and there are the leisure centres in Barrow and Dalton where there is plenty going on."
