Jackie is keen to highlight the career opportunities in Cumbria
Jackie Arnold, Head of Skills for BAE Systems Submarines, lives at Rampside
Jackie Arnold MBE is enjoying a rewarding and successful career in Cumbria, and is committed to ensuring that others make the most of the exciting opportunities available.
Jackie began her career in Cumbria as a chartered accountant, before being offered the role of company accountant for Lakeland Power Limited at Roosecote power station.
“It was a fabulous 10 years,” she said. “I was based in Cumbria but worked in London for chunks of time, spent long periods in Zurich and managed shareholders in Los Angeles.
“I was able to work outside the area and then bring that broader experience back to my future roles, which was superb.
“I was then offered a role as Chief Accountant at BAE Systems Submarines, which I did for five years, and since then I’ve had a strategy role and I’m now picking up a skills role here in Barrow.
“My new role focuses on ensuring that, as a business, we’re equipping ourselves to satisfy the resourcing requirements of our future business plan. Our business plan looks out over the next 40 years or so, so what do we need our workforce to look like over that period of time?
“I look at how we best invest in the business to ensure we a) attract the right people with the right talent and b) develop that talent to ensure our employees can carry out the roles we need going forward.
“I think it’s a great time for young people to join the business.
“We’ve grown incredibly fast over the last few years and are more prepared than ever to give young people an opportunity to demonstrate what they can do and reward them when they’ve been able to do that with long and fulfilling careers.
“It feels like a huge opportunity at BAE Systems.”
Jackie lives close to a ‘beautiful’ beach in Cumbria and takes in the stunning views over Morecambe Bay before starting work.
“I live on the coast, so I wake up and welcome the day by taking my dog to the beach for walks,” she said. “It’s a lovely way to start the day.
“The area has been very good to me, as it’s allowed me to focus a lot of my time here and keep a base to bring up my children, while appreciating life outside the area through work.
“I don’t feel like I’ve missed out on anything by staying in Cumbria.”
Jackie lives an active life in Cumbria, and loves living so close to the many fells in The Lake District.
“I love to run, cycle and fell walk, so what better place for all of those hobbies?” she said. “I’ve been able to share my hobbies with my children as they’ve grown up.
“You never feel frightened when you’re walking the fells as you always bump into people and everyone is so friendly.
“What's particularly nice is the whole family can join in. Even our dog can be part of the experience - he's welcome in pubs and cafes at the end of the day, too.”
