Jake said: “I’d always been good at maths, so it was a natural choice for me to go into accountancy. I knew I wanted to get a job when I finished my GCSEs and by choosing an apprenticeship I was able to work full-time at the same time as studying for my accountancy qualifications. As an apprentice you get to work while you learn – it’s the best of both worlds.”
Now that he has qualified, Jake works within Furness College’s busy finance team and is looking to develop his skills further by undertaking a professional accountancy course.
He said: “The best thing about being an apprentice is getting the chance to develop your knowledge in the classroom at the same time as experiencing the working world. You get independence and freedom.
“If someone was considering going down the apprenticeship route, I’d tell them to go for it. It’s a great opportunity to learn and develop skills in a working environment. I also think it makes you more employable in the long run because you’ve got actual work experience alongside your qualifications.”
