The new professional cycling team being set up by Sir Bradley Wiggins will be among the superstars of cycling coming to south Cumbria in May for the second consecutive year of the town hosting the national Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

Barrow will stage Round Six of the high-octane street circuit race on May 29 as part of its 10-event national tour taking place in May and June.

The decision to again transform Barrow town centre into an incredible cycling circuit for the evening event follows the success of last year’s race, which attracted 12,000 spectators and brought more than £115,000 into the local economy.

Cumbria County Council will again be working closely with Barrow Borough Council and local partners to deliver the event, which will take place during half-term week.

Team WIGGINS, formed by 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins, and the ONE Pro Cycling team of England cricketer Matt Prior, will be one of the star attractions on the night.

Last year’s winning team JLT Condor will also be competing and will be attempting to become the first ever squad to defend their Tour Series title.

Cllr David Southward, Cumbria County Council's cabinet member responsible for economic development, said:

“Barrow did such a great job last year of hosting the event that the organisers were really keen to come back. The crowds were brilliant and the cyclists said on the night what a great welcome Barrow had given them. This year, with the 'Wiggo factor', I think it will be even bigger and it will be a Friday evening to remember. Once again we want everyone to come along and get involved.”

This year will be the seventh season of The Pearl Izumi Tour Series, a unique team based, televised city centre cycling series organised by SweetSpot Group Ltd, the company behind the organisation and promotion of The Tour of Britain and The Women’s Tour. The Pearl Izumi Tour Series brings together the very best in British professional teams and riders, with nine teams competing on town and city-centre circuits in front of packed crowds as a part of a full day of cycling activities
