Almost 200 sixth formers from across the county battled it out to take part in the scheme organised by the Centre for Leadership Performance – but just 39 got through the initial selection process and Dragons’ Den style interviews.

The successful students spent their half term break in February 2015 on exciting Dream Placements working alongside senior managers and directors, and seeing business decisions being made from the inside.

The host companies offering Dream Placements for 2015 were AMEC, Allerdale Borough Council, BAE Systems Marine, CN Media Group, Costain, Direct Rail Services, Doosan Babcock, Energy Solutions. Gen 2, GlaxoSmithKline, Iggesund, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald, National Nuclear Laboratory, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Nuclear Management Partners, NSG Environmental Ltd, REACT Engineering, Sellafield Ltd, Story Homes, Story Contracting, Thomas Graham, Nuvia and the University of Cumbria.

Dream Placement candidates experience how companies and their leaders operate at the highest level, learning leadership skills and being given a vision of what they can aspire to in leadership roles in Cumbria, building their confidence and helping them in their career choices.

The scheme also provides an opportunity for local businesses to meet and work with bright young Cumbrians and showcase the exciting career opportunities available for them here in the county.

GSK, in Ulverston welcomed Ulverston Victoria High School student Jenny Bond, 16, and Workington Sixth Form student Matthew Smith, aged 17.

Miss Bond said: “This scheme gives you a really good insight into how a company is run. It’s really good that we have met all the senior leaders. You wouldn’t normally get that opportunity.”

Sarah Glass, Centre for Leadership Performance development manager, has been delighted by the feedback from students and host companies.

She said: “This programme is unique because it gives young people a chance to see how the county’s top employers operate at the highest level.

“And it also of course gives those companies the chance to forge on-going relationships with fantastic young people in Cumbria and really showcase what they do. Our Dream Placement host companies have been stunned by the high standard of the sixth form candidates.

“Thanks to their support and the commitment of organisations, schools and colleges across Cumbria, Dream Placement has become a model for engaging bright young Cumbrians with business and a chance for these students to see what they can aspire to in leadership roles.

“It’s also a great opportunity for those host companies to assess the young talent who could be their future employees and leaders and forge on-going relationships.”
