Education steps into an exciting new era on Monday, August 1 as two leading colleges merge in Cumbria.
Barrow Sixth Form College officially merges with Furness College – both partners of Choose Cumbria – to offer an unrivalled subject choice for students, with one of the widest choices of academic, professional and training opportunities in Cumbria.
The government has backed the new merged college in its area review, which looked at post-16 education across Cumbria.
Andrew Wren, Principal of the merged college, said it was an excellent endorsement from the government.
He added: “Today heralds a huge step forward for education in Cumbria as, under a merged college, we can offer an unparalleled choice of high-quality courses to suit all young people, adults and employers.
“We are committed to providing an excellent educational route to enable young people to achieve their career aspirations.
“It speaks volumes that the area review team found our merger to be robust, resilient and a strong platform for the future of education and skills training in the Furness area.”
The review also recommended a joint venture between the county’s colleges and the University of Cumbria to support the delivery of the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership skills plan and work together in areas including joint responses to bidding opportunities.
The merger will see the two colleges form one partnership but operate across two campuses – Channelside and Rating Lane – with both retaining their separate sites and identities.
