A Cumbrian business is playing a vital role in the creation of one of the most important new hospitals in the country.
Electrical safety specialist Bender UK, a partner of Choose Cumbria, has been awarded a contract to supply critical care power systems for the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
When the £335m redevelopment is complete next year, it will be the largest all single-patient room hospital in England.
The infrastructure giant Carillion is the main contractor.
It has awarded Bender UK the contract for isolated power systems, and uninterruptible power systems with the touch screen control systems.
Under the agreement, Bender will deliver and install equipment for the hospital's 18 operating theatres, to include hygienic touch-screen theatre control panels, with picture archiving and communication system viewing screens.
Bender UK is working with Crown House Technologies, which is managing the installation and commissioning of mechanical and electrical services to deliver advanced power protection, and to provide sufficient capacity to future proof the hospital for the anticipated expansion of power requirements.
Gareth Brunton, Bender UK's managing director, said: “Our vast experience of hospital electrical systems and a proven track record in delivering large complex projects means that Bender UK is able to make a significant contribution to the healthcare sector in terms of meeting challenging deadlines and adding value at the specification and installation stages.”
The hospital is part of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Construction of a new 12-storey hospital, alongside the existing building in Prescot Street, Liverpool, began in 2014. It will contain 646 beds, all in individual en-suite rooms, spread across 23 wards, a 40-bed critical care unit and 18 operating theatres.
The existing Royal Liverpool University Hospital is the largest hospital on Merseyside.
Each year it provides care and treatment for around 93,500 emergency patients and the Trust sees more than 117,000 day case and inpatients, and more than 6m outpatients attendances.
Once the new hospital is open, the existing hospital will be demolished. In its place, there are plans to develop the Liverpool Health Campus, which will consist of 200,000sq ft of space attracting life sciences, biomedical research companies and health organisations.
Once the project is completed, the Bender UK service team will provide annual maintenance, 24/7 technical support and a rapid response call-out service 365 days of the year to ensure the continuous supply of power to critical care areas.
