Jackie Daniel, chief executive of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, spoke about life as an NHS manager in her most recent blog to employees.

Ms Daniel described national research which has found a high turn-over of senior leadership roles across the country and absences in management positions at numerous trusts.

Ms Daniel is keen to inform staff about the opportunities awaiting them should they want to take the next step in their careers.

She said: “I want us to start the debate about where the future leaders are coming from and what we need to do to develop and excite them. Experience tells me it is not always where you expect it, or the usual people.

“I want our leaders from the future to come from all parts of our hospitals. It would be sad if we thought all our future leaders were already in recognised senior ‘leadership’ roles.”
