THE health trust which covers South Cumbria has won national recognition for the way it recruits staff.
The Workforce team at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) won an Allocate Award for collaborative working, which has included promoting career opportunities in partnership with Choose South Cumbria.
The Allocate Awards are given to organisations or people that work particularly effectively as part of a wider team or across departments and organisations.
UHMBT won the award because of its approach to recruitment over the last 18 months.
This resulted in 719 new starters during 2014/15, including 159 registered nurses and midwives. In the last 12 months 37 consultants have been recruited to work in the trust’s hospitals.
Its approach to recruitment included the launch of a new recruitment portal, Fresh Start, which means all jobs and application information is available in one place, as well as international recruitment campaigns in Greece, Spain and Cyprus.
It also attended careers fairs and professional conferences to promote vacancies and the trust’s services and launched an apprentice programme for care support workers in which they work supporting clinical staff while studying towards a two year diploma in clinical healthcare support.
The trust has also worked with young people in schools, colleges and community projects to promote working in the health and care sector.
Karmini McCann, workforce business partner for the trust, said: “One of our key values is about developing and sustaining partnerships both with healthcare colleagues and our local communities.
“Winning such a prestigious award shows the power of what can be achieved if organisations work together with a common goal, and I’d like to thank all our colleagues who have helped make this possible.”
Luke Dicicco, project Manager for Choose South Cumbria, added: “We’re absolutely delighted that Choose South Cumbria has been recognised as part of the award for collaborative working.
“UHMBT are one of a number of partners from a wide range of industries who have joined forces to promote this region as a place for a fantastic career and lifestyle.
“The strength of Choose South Cumbria and its message to the UK and beyond is all down to successful collaborative working, and recognition such as this award is fantastic for all those involved.”
