Workington: what's it like?
Situated in the west of Cumbria, perched on the Solway Coast, Workington was originally an industrial-led seaport, making its fortunes through mining and steel.
Today, the town centre has a modern, pedestrianised shopping mall (Washington Square) with a mixture of independent shops and high street names and other leisure facilities, such as a trampoline park and a multiscreen cinema, located on the outskirts of town.
Sport is very important in the town, as are community and cultural events. Workington has had several outdoor events in recent years including music festivals, continental markets and town fairs.
