Barrow Borough Council planning committee has given Furness College the go-ahead to build an Advanced Manufacturing Centre on its site in Barrow. The application was approved yesterday at the town hall.
Planning officer Jason Hipkiss has recommended it should be approved.
He concluded in his report: “It is seen as filling an identified skills gap in the local market that may only widen as existing schemes continue to expand and proposed projects begin to take shape in the town and wider county area.”
Now approved, work could start on the project in June and be completed by March 2016.
The 1,500sq m centre will be a base for engineering and advanced manufacturing research, as well as rapid prototyping and emerging technologies.
It will allow the college to meet the increasing skills needs of major local employers and recruit more apprentices.
