Popular actor and frequent visitor to Cumbria Steve Coogan will play Ulverston-born Stan Laurel in upcoming film Stan & Ollie.

Stan & Ollie, developed by BBC Films, centres on the much-loved comedy duo's 1953 variety hall tour of Britain.

In the film, Laurel and Hardy, played by American actor John C Reilly, attempt to reconnect with each other, and their fans, as they deal with Hardy's failing health and come to terms with the end of their careers. Production of the film starts later this year.

Writer Jeff Pope, who won a BAFTA Award with Coogan for Philomena, said: "Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are my heroes. When I watch their movies, in my head I am six years old watching the TV utterly spellbound."

Coogan is a frequent visitor to Cumbria, and recently revealed that he spent the night in his car after being trapped by Thirlmere lake in the aftermath of Storm Desmond. Click here to read more.

There are many reminders of Stan Laurel’s links to Ulverston, including the statue of Laurel and Hardy outside the Coronation Hall and the Laurel and Hardy Museum.
