The local economy relies heavily on the tourism industry, with plenty of employment in retail, leisure, hospitality and outdoor pursuits. Part-time work is plentiful in the summer season and both towns have good links with the area's main industry and business hubs.
Towns such as Kendal, Barrow and Ulverston are only a short drive away, offering a wide range of job opportunities in a variety of sectors whatever stage you are at in your career. What's on in Windermere and Bowness?
Culturally, Windermere and Bowness can hold their own. They have each inspired writers, authors and artists throughout the centuries and there are plenty of attractions to enjoy.
Pay homage to the internationally famous children’s author at The World of Beatrix Potter, check out the fish at the Lakes Aquarium, explore the gardens and take a treetop trek at Brockhole or visit Blackwell The Arts & Crafts House. The latter gives free entry to all children under 16 so it’s a great place for family days out. Other attractions offer family passes and discounts to local residents.
The Old Laundry Theatre promises a lively annual programme of drama, classical music, folk, comedy and film. Bowness also has its own privately owned Royalty cinema, showing the latest releases. Large festivals and outdoor events are less common here but the Lake District Summer Music Festival holds concerts at both centres each year.
Five miles out of town you will find Fellfoot Park, a great place to explore with children. Lots of opportunities for play, a tree trail, an adventure playground, sailing, kayaking and swimming. For rainy days, check out The Fun Factory in Bowness for soft play.
For those who like to get onto the water there are a range of watersport activities and clubs. Windermere Lake Cruises run a regular service from Lakeside, near Newby Bridge, in the south, up to Waterhead, near Ambleside, in the north.
