Work, education, and facilities
In terms of employment, there’s a wide variety of opportunities in a range of sectors for people looking to begin or develop their careers. Major employers in Carlisle offer careers in manufacturing, engineering and corporate functions, with a growing digital and creative industries sector and a number of successful start-up businesses in the city.
The University of Cumbria has two campuses in Carlisle, at Brampton Road and Fusehill Street, offering careers in education and an ideal learning environment for students and researchers. Students have praised the city for its close community and friendly atmosphere, making it the ideal place for someone who wants to live in a city without being lost in a huge urban sprawl.
Carlisle also has a large number of schools from pre-school through to secondary.
There’s a wide range of housing available varying wildly in style and budget. There are many affordable properties in the city and surrounding areas but as you move into some of the outlying villages, quality and prices can be much higher.
Carlisle is served by The Cumberland Infirmary. It provides a 24 hours A&E service with Trauma Unit status, a consultant-led maternity service and special care baby unit, as well as a wide range of clinical services and outpatient clinics.
A city of sport
The city is also home to Carlisle Racecourse, which has regular race meetings and events, and Carlisle United FC, who play at Brunton Park, the largest football stadium in England which is not all-seated. The football team has its own Sports Trust which delivers multi skilled activities to communities across the county including football camps, teams for young players and walking football for older participants.
Carlisle also has its own successful cricket and rugby teams. And whatever sport you are interested in, there are clubs, groups and training sessions for all ages and abilities.
