We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant in Medical Microbiology to join our committed and friendly team at the North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust (NCUHT). An enthusiastic and forward-thinking consultant will complete a supportive team covering North Cumbria. This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which clinicians are at the forefront of management.

This friendly, open department is looking for another microbiologist to become a member of a team of four consultants based in the Infection Science Department at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. The Department of Infection Science consists of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, all centralised at CIC. The Microbiology department at Carlisle provides services for the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital and for all GPs and community hospital services in west, north and east Cumbria. Candidates will be encouraged to develop an interest in one or more speciality areas to compliment the team’s existing structure.

This post is based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle (CIC). Consultant microbiologists will be required to work across site on a rotational basis at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven (WCH). The 24/7 on call duty is shared equally between 4 consultants.

The Trust has recognised that there is a national shortage of candidates for clinical vacancies in some specialties. So, in order to attract suitable candidates to posts which the Trust has defined as hard to fill, the Trust has recently agreed to award a discretionary recruitment premium to posts which are specifically agreed by the organisation. This post currently attracts a discretionary recruitment premium of up to 10% (based on basic salary) per annum. This is payable for up to four years and is reviewed by the Trust on an annual basis.

Candidates interested in relocating to the region are able to apply for a generous relocation package of up to £8,000 and NCUH NHS Trust will provide support and assistance to help successful applicants move to the area.

The department has full CPA accreditation and is awaiting award of UKAS/ISO:15189 accreditation following a successful inspection November 2015.

The post will be based at Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle but the post holder may be required to work at other sites within the Trust.

Applicants must hold valid registration with the GMC, and have possession of, or be within six months of gaining a CCT in Histopathology and be eligible for inclusion on the specialist register of the GMC.

Application Requirements


Education & 


Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to 

practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), 

or be eligible for registration within six months of 


FRCPath or equivalent.

If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a 

holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training 

(CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by 

date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, 

they will be required to show evidence of 

equivalence to the UK CCT

Experience & 


High standard of clinical skill and expertise in 

clinical microbiology

Clinical Governance

Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of 

clinical microbiology problems both emergency and 

elective and in primary care.

Ability to take full and independent responsibility for 

liaising with clinical staff for the clinical care of 

patients with infections.

Experience in infection prevention and control
