''A great place to be cared for; a great place to work''
Do you want to work for an organisation who has just received an overall rating of GOOD from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with a rating of OUTSTANDING in care?
Would you like to be part of a team delivering high quality Emergency Care, and relocate to live in or near the Lake District or Yorkshire Dales National Parks? Our department has a workload to keep you interested and challenged, but still give you time to talk to your patients properly, and do the practical procedures that interest you as an Emergency Physician: for example procedural sedation with ketamine, or Bier’s block for Colles’ fracture. If Medical Education is your thing, then we do simulation training in the resuscitation room using tablets and screens to mimic real-life scenarios, and actively use video and other media to enhance the learning experience for our doctors and nurses. We are a Trauma Unit practicing ETC models of trauma care.
There are opportunities to get involved in education at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level, and the Trust has a flexible approach and, can fund Masters’ level study in relevant areas. The University of Lancaster Medical School supports dedicated time in consultant job plans for teaching, and for formal roles within the University.
Other consultant interests in the department are Teaching, Simulation, Ultrasound, Critical Care and Medical Law. The department’s Clinical Lead Dr Colin Read has a flexible approach to keeping the consultant team fulfilled professionally, and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Supporting Activity time can be worked flexibly in terms of where and when it is done.
If you would be interested in a dual post with another specialty this can be accommodated, as we are a forward-thinking department that appreciates that there is much benefit from having clinicians with experience from outside of ED, so that clinical strengths are shared and there is cross-over of skills.
As Emergency Departments become busier and busier, life outside of work is increasingly important to prevent burn-out. The Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Parks are close by, and it is possible to live in these areas and work in Lancaster: if running, cycling and the outdoors are your thing, then this is one of the best places in the country to be based.
Lancaster schools are well known for their excellence and the City of Lancaster and the town of Kendal known for being ‘the gateway’ to the Lake District, offer excellent primary and secondary schools.
The department sees 53,000 new patients a year which, whilst still a busy unit, enables the opportunity to provide good quality care. The department is staffed with Consultants, SAS Doctors (24/7 middle grade rota in operation, with two MGs on nights) and juniors. In addition there is a strong nursing team including an evolving team of Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Physician Associates.
These posts are available Full Time 10PA's up to a maximum of 12PA's, or Part Time. The consultant position attracts a Recruitment and Retention Premium of enhanced pay for out of hours PA’s (2 hours per PA for DCC).
