The camping pods at Thornfield boast free wifi and free parking while all plots have a kitchenette. Campers can bring pets.

Review: "We stayed in two pods between us and they were lovely accommodation, we thoroughly enjoyed our battery recharge with the hot tub, fire pit and BBQ, plenty locally in terms of walks and eating and local stores for supplies."

2. Pasturewood Holidays, Carlisle 5/5 of 127 reviews

Another pod-based site, Pasturewood also has hot tubs and free parking. Campers can bring pets.

Review: "Simply perfect and so relaxing. Try it for yourselves, it caters for all whatever the weather. A lovely, friendly, family run site which flourishes with the love and attention shown to its guests."

This site offers traditional tent pitches as well as pods and pitches for motorhomes and static caravans. It also has a bar and restaurant with private bathrooms for hire.

4. The Quiet Site, Ullswater 4.5/5 of 497 reviews

Pitches are available for caravans, motorhomes and tents. The site has a bar and restaurant and even a library.

Review: "This is a great campsite with lovely views over Ullswater - we were lucky enough to have a tent pitch with a view straight across the valley/lake. The showers and toilets were modern and immaculately clean and the family bathrooms are really helpful for little ones."

5. Castlerigg Hall, Keswick 4.5/5 of 332 reviews

As well as static caravans for hire, Castlerigg Hall is open to motorhomes, tents and has camping pods but there are no electric hook-up points for camping.

Review: "First visit to Keswick and stayed at Castlerigg Camping and Caravan and what a gem of a place. View from our pitch was stunning. The site itself is great, toilets and showers are immaculate and there's a great on-site shop that sells everything you need."

6. Eskdale Campsite, Eskdale 4.5/5 of 253 reviews

Eskdale Campsite, with pitches and pods, has a toilet and shower block, children's play area and washing up room as well as laundry facilities, a chemical disposal point and drying room - all of which are free to use.

Review: "We have stayed at Eskdale Campsite on numerous occasions and we have to say that for us, it is the best campsite for our needs in the Lake District National Park, Cumbria. The owners are extremely welcoming, friendly and really do cater for your needs, amendments, gripes etc."

7. Wild Rose Park, Appleby 4.5/5 of 238 reviews

The site has an outdoor pool, bistro and bar area and welcomes tourers, motorhomes and tents as well as having holiday homes and wigwams available for hire.

Review: "The place is great for family. Stunning area and well kept site. The staff are very friendly and plenty to do for the kids. I would advise if you are towing a caravan for first time and don't have motor movers avoid it. The pitches are very private but tight to get on if no movers."

8. Mains Farm Caravan Site, Kirkoswald 5/5 of 136 reviews

This site offers pitches for caravans and tents and has pods and bunk barns available for hire. Facilities include two shower blocks and a laundry room.

Review: "The owners couldn't have been more helpful in accommodating our group together, which consisted of one family in a caravan and one in a tent. The children loved the park facilities and exploring the old outbuildings. We had a great day kayaking down the River Eden, rewarded with a walk to the local pub The Crown."

Known as being the campsite of choice of Dragons' Den star Duncan Bannatyne, Fallbarrow offers static caravan pitches and hire with facilities including a bar, beer garden, play area and occasional entertainment.

Lovely playback for children on site, laundry machines on site, small modern shop and gorgeous cafe there too. Ideal for taking children of all ages. There is a small area for exercising your dog off lead too."
